RETAIL FURNITURE REPORTTORJUNE 1942

Sales a t r e t a i l f u r n i t u r e stores declined s u b s t a n t i a l l y in June and -con**
tinued well below the 1941 l e v e l . This was due in large p a r t to the f u r t h e r curtailment in June of s a l e s on instalment. During the p a s t year instalment sales
have declined from more than 80 per cent to about 70 per cent of t o t a l s a l e s . There
was a corresponding r i s e in the proportion of cash s a l e s . Cash sales showed a small
decline from May t o June but were 36 per cent above June of l a s t y e a r . Inventories,
which are about one and one-half times as large as a t t h i s time l a s t year, were
s l i g h t l y below those f o r May 1942,
Accounts receivable continued to decline while c o l l e c t i o n s showed a f u r ther increase over the year ago l e v e l . The r e s u l t a n t r a t i o of c o l l e c t i o n s to outstandings was considerably above t h a t f o r the corresponding month l a s t year.
