SOURCES OF PERSONAL INCOME
Personal income rose $12.7 billion (annual rate) in August, following a rise of $10.7 billion in July. The changes
were affected by three special factors: a large increase in retroactive social security benefit payments in July,
changes in subsidy payments to farmers in July and August, and a strike in the communications industry in June.
Excluding the effect of these factors, personal income increased $16.0 billion in August and $6.9 billion in July.

Data are prorated averages of Wednesday figures for domestically chartered banks and averages
of month-end data for foreign-related institutions. Data beginning January 1984 are not strictly
comparable with data for earlier periods, largely because beginning January 1984 certain obligations
of States and political subdivisions are included in loans rather than in other securities.
