To print the monthly publication entitled "Economic Indicators"
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the
Joint Economic Committee be authorized to issue a monthly publication entitled "Economic Indicators," and that
a sufficient quantity be printed to furnish one copy to each Member of Congress; the Secretary and the Sergeant
at Arms of the Senate; the Clerk, Sergeant at Arms, and Doorkeeper of the House of Representatives; two
copies to the libraries of the Senate and House, and the Congressional Library; seven hundred copies to the
Joint Economic Committee; and the required numbers of copies to the Superintendent of Documents for
distribution to depository libraries; and that the Superintendent of Documents be authorized to have copies
printed for sale to the public.

TOTAL OUTPUT, INCOME, AND SPENDING
GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT
According to preliminary estimates for the third quarter of 1982, gross national product rose $46.2 billion or 6.2
percent, both at annual rates. Real output (GNP adjusted for price changes) rose 0.8 percent, annual rate, and the
implicit price deflator rose at a 5.4 percent annual rate.

According to preliminary estimates for the third quarter, business fixed investment declined $10.6 billion (annual
rate) from its second quarter level and residential investment outlays rose $1.9 billion. There was a $0.5 billion
decrease in inventories following a $16.2 billion decrease in the second quarter.

PRICES
PRODUCER PRICES
In September, the producer price index for all finished goods fell 0.1 percent, seasonally adjusted. Prices of
finished consumer foods fell 0.5 percent, and prices of other finished consumer goods increased 0.1 percent. Prices
of capital equipment fell 0.4 percent from their August level.

U.S. INTERNATIONAL TRANSACTIONS
The surplus on current account increased to $2.1 billion in the second quarter from $1.1 billion in the first quarter.
The merchandise trade deficit fell slightly, to $5.8 billion from $5.9 billion in the first quarter.

U.S. INTERNATIONAL TRANSACTIONS—Continued
In the capital accounts, claims on foreigners reported by U.S. banks increased $33.9 billion in the second quarter,
compared with $32.7 billion in the first quarter, reflecting activity of International Banking Facilities (IBFs) and the
on-going transfer of U.S. banks' business from offshore branches to their IBFs. Liabilities to private foreigners
reported by U.S. banks increased $24.1 billion, the third consecutive large quarterly increase.
