To print the monthly publication entitled "Economic Indicators"
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the
Joint Economic Committee be authorized to issue a monthly publication entitled "Economic Indicators," and that
a sufficient quantity be printed to furnish one copy to each Member of Congress; the Secretary and the Sergeant
at Arms of the Senate; the Clerk, Sergeant at Arms, and Doorkeeper of the House of Representatives; two
copies to the libraries of the Senate and House, and the Congressional Library; seven hundred copies to the
Joint Economic Committee; and the required numbers of copies to the Superintendent of Documents for
distribution to depository libraries; and that the Superintendent of Documents be authorized to have copies
printed for sale to the public.

TOTAL OUTPUT, INCOME, AND SPENDING
GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT
According to preliminary estimates for the fourth quarter of 1984, gross national product (GNP) rose $57.9 billion
or 6.4 percent, both at annual rates. Real GNP (GNP adjusted for price changes) rose 3.9 percent (annual rate)
and the implicit price deflator, 2.4 percent (annual rate).

Personal income increased $16.4 billion (annual rate) in December, following
Wages and salaries rose $18.3 billion in December compared to a rise of
payments fell $5.4 billion in December largely because of a shift in the
retirement benefits (which reduced transfers by $16.8 billion) and an increase

GROSS PRIVATE DOMESTIC INVESTMENT
According to preliminary estimates for the fourth quarter of 1984, business fixed investment rose $13.2 billion
(annual rate) and residential investment outlays were unchanged. There was a $31.1 billion increase in inventories
following an increase of $71.8 billion in the third quarter.

According to the Commerce Department October-November survey, business spending for new plant and
equipment for the year 1985 is expected to be 8.4 percent above the 1984 level; spending for 1984 is expected

RATES

The seasonally adjusted overall unemployment rate, which includes resident Armed Forces in the labor force, rose
to 7.3 percent in January, from 7.1 percent in December. The unemployment rate for civilian workers rose to 7.4

SELECTED MEASURES OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND UNEMPLOYMENT
INSURANCE PROGRAMS
In January, the percentage of unemployed persons who had been out of work for less than 5 weeks rose, while the
percentages out of work for 5-14 weeks, for 15-26 weeks, and for 27 weeks and jover fell. Both the mean and

In the capital accounts, claims on foreigners reported by U.S. banks decreased $18.4 billion in the third quarter of
1984 compared with an increase of $20.6 billion in the second quarter. Liabilities to foreigners and international
financial institutions reported by U.S. banks (excluding U.S. Treasury securities) decreased $3.9 billion, compared
to an increase of $20.8 billion in the second quarter.
