SOURCES OF PERSONAL INCOME
Personal income rose $1.2 billion (annual rate) in January, following a rise of $22.8 billion in December. The
I increases were affected by several special factors: a pay raise for Federal Government employees, cost-of-living
adjustments to several transfer payment programs, and changes in social insurance contributions affected the
January change; subsidy payments to farmers affected both the January and December changes. Excluding these
factors, personal income increased $10.5 billion in January and $6.4 billion in December.

Data are prorated averages of Wednesday figures for domestically chartered banks and averages
of month-end data for foreign-related institutions. Data beginning January 1984 are not strictly
comparable with data for earlier periods, largely because beginning January 1984 certain obligations
of States and political subdivisions are included in loans rather than in other securities.
