Res. 55] To print the monthly publication entitled ''Economic Indicators" Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Joint Economic Committee be authorized to issue a monthly publication entitled "Economic Indicators," and that a sufficient quantity be printed to furnish one copy to each Member of Congress; the Secretary and the Sergeant at Arms of the Senate; the Clerk, Sergeant at Arms, and Doorkeeper of the House of Representatives; two copies to the libraries of the Senate and House, and the Congressional Library; seven hundred copies to the Joint Economic Committee; and the required numbers of copies to the Superintendent of Documents for distribution to depository libraries; and that the Superintendent of Documents be authorized to have copies printed for sale to the public. It should be noted that many of the series have undergone major revisions since the Supplement was published in the fall of 1980. ii TOTAL OUTPUT, INCOME, AND SPENDING GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT According to revised estimates for the fourth quarter of 1981, gross national product rose $30.3 billion or 4.1 percent, both at annual rates. Real output (GNP adjusted for price changes) fell 4.7 percent from the third quarter level and the implicit price deflator rose at a 9.3 percent annual rate. GROSS PRIVATE DOMESTIC INVESTMENT According to revised estimates for the fourth quarter, business fixed investment rose $2.4 billion (annual rate) as nonresidential construction outlays rose $4.7 billion and producers' durable equipment purchases fell $2.3 billion. Residential investment outlays declined $6.7 billion. There was a $12.6 billion increase in inventories following a $27.5 billion increase in the third quarter. The survey conducted in October-November and reported in December indicated a sizable increase in spending in the first half of 1982/ the results from the latest survey suggest that first-half spending plans may have been revised downward since the previous survey. According to the advance survey, retail sales fell 1 percent in January following no change in December.
