SOURCES OF PERSONAL INCOME
Personal income rose $14.3 billion (annual rate) in July, following a rise of $9.9 billion in June. The increases were
affected by two special factors: a large increase in retroactive social security benefit payments in May affected
the June increase and changes in subsidy payments to farmers affected both months. Excluding these special
factors, personal income increased $9.3 billion in July and $16.1 billion in June.

Data are prorated averages of Wednesday figures for domestically chartered banks and averages
of month-end data for foreign-related institutions. Data beginning January 1984 are not strictly
comparable with data for earlier periods, largely because beginning January 1984 certain obligations
of States and political subdivisions are included'in loans rather than in other securities.
