Featuring thematic maps, the Statistical Atlas was a landmark publication of the federal government. It displays census information about the United States using choropleth mapping (thematic mapping), a technique common with modern GIS systems. The maps highlight the condition of the country immediately following the Civil War. For more information about this important document, see Donald Dahmann's commentary at the Library of Congress' American Memory website. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/census2.html#frst
