Statistical Atlas of the United States Based on the Results of the Ninth Census 1870
In honor of our data mapping site, GEOFRED (http://geofred.stlouisfed.org), we have posted a very old data mapping product. Featuring thematic maps, the Statistical Atlas was a landmark publication of the federal government. It displays census information about the United States using choropleth mapping (thematic mapping), a technique common with modern GIS systems. The maps highlight the condition of the country immediately following the Civil War.
This file was originally downloaded from the Library of Congress as JPG2000 and converted into a compressed pdf, for ease of use.
For a historical account of the first national atlas of the United States, please see Donald Dahman's description at the Library of Congress' American Memory website.
