October 1, 1949Mao Tse-tung overthrows Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalist Chinese Government. He proclaims the People's Republic of China.
June 28, 1950North Korean forces invade South Korea.
October 2, 1950The comic strip "Peanuts," by Charles Schultz, is published.
January 9, 1951The United Nations headquarters officially opens in New York.
March 4, 1951The Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department release a joint announcement that comes to be known as the Treasury–Federal Reserve Accord. It allows the Federal Reserve to operate independently to create monetary policy.
March 21, 1951William McChesney Martin Jr. is confirmed as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. He serves until January 30, 1970.
