October 24, 1929Black Thursday, the initial Wall Street Crash of 1929: It is followed by a second crash on Black Tuesday, five days later, which causes general panic and marks the beginning of the Great Depression.
June 17, 1930Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act raises tariffs on imported goods to record levels, which adversely affects American import and export trade and manufacturing.
September 16, 1930Eugene Meyer becomes Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve. He serves until May 10, 1933.
1930Ted Drewes frozen custard stand opens on South Grand in St. Louis, Missouri.
